Painting 1- final
project:
Choose one of the
following options:
1. Do a master copy:
Choose one of my post cards and create a reproduction of it,
as exact as possible,
Replicating the quality of the paint, marks, colors, and the
apparent approach and methods of the work.
If you have a postcard of a work of art you may use your own.
The painting should be a minimum of 20 x 20 or larger.
Stretch and prime your canvas yourself.
Make sure you create a painting that shares the same ratio
of size with your selected postcard.
Write a short 1 page essay about your chosen artist and
their work, why you are interested in it, how you approached painting it, your
successes and failures, what you learned about painting by doing a master copy.
Make a color copy of the postcard and label it for presentation.
2. Paint an animal,
portrait, or place from one ( or more ) of your own photographs
You must print the photograph in color equal to or larger
than 8 x 8 inches. It may not be a black and white photo.
The painting should be a minimum of 20 x 20 or larger.

Make sure you create a painting that shares the same ratio
of size with your selected photograph
Choose an artist that you are interested in from one of our
3 slide presentations that you would like to relate to your painting from a
photograph. Their work does not need to have a direct link, and you do not have
to paint like the artist. This is just someone you are interested in that you
can loosely tie to your painting.
Write a short 1 page essay about your chosen artist and
their work, why you are interested in it, and then talk about how you
approached painting your chosen image from your own photograph, your successes
and failures, what you learned about
painting. Print a color image of your artists work and label it.
3. Make a painting
that deals with our digital lives:
How can you approach the subjects of social media, the
internet, your smart phone, Tellevision, tablets, computer life? Use your
digital/electronic objects, digital images and printed images to come up with
an interesting still life, collage, or other type of painting.
The painting should be a minimum of 20 x 24 or larger.
Stretch and prime your canvas yourself.
Choose an artist from our slide collections that engages
with digital media in some way, and write a 1 page essay about your chosen
artist and their work, why you are interested in it, how they inspired you in your
approach to your painting, your successes and failures, what you learned
about painting by exploring your
relationship to the digital. Print a color image of your artists work and label
it.
4. Create a personal
still life and paint it from observation:
The painting should be a minimum of 20 x 24 or larger.
Stretch and prime your canvas yourself.
Choose objects that relate to each other in some way.
For instance: you could paint a still life of your favorite
books and print media, you could paint a still life of the products you use
every day when you get ready to go out, you could paint a still life of the
contents of your backpack or purse, or your car. A still life of a week of your
trash. A still life of anything!
Bring your objects with you and set them up in the
classroom, you may create a set with anything you desire. Make the still life
feel like it is painted somewhere other than the painting studio.
The painting should be a minimum of 20 x 20 or larger.

Choose an artist that you are interested in from one of our
3 slide presentations that you would like to relate to your still life
painting. Attempt to paint in the style that they paint in, paying close
attention to the use of materials, composition, and apparent approach. Print
the image in color and label it.
Write a short 1 page essay about your chosen artist and
their work, why you are interested in it, and then talk about how you
approached painting your still life, your successes and failures, what you
learned about painting. Print a color image of the work that inspired you and
label it.
This painting, printed labeled artist image, and written
response is Due
December 4th, or 6th, depending on your critique day.
